First Grade, Room 4
2009-2010

Dear Room 4 Families,

Today is the first day of November and it reminds me how quickly this year has started and about all of the fun and exciting times we have ahead as the holidays approach. October was filled with conferences, the launch of our Thursday Centers, our first field trip, and our Halloween party. It was a busy month and all of us in Room 4 are looking forward to more busy, exciting and learning-filled times ahead.

Fondly,

Mrs. Rugani

CURRICULUM

Houghton Mifflin Reading: We are wrapping up our “Surprise!” Theme and will be doing some assessments to ensure that all students grasped and extended the concepts they learned. We will be jumping right into our next theme, “Let’s Look Around.” This theme will cover skills such as final consonants, double final consonants, plurals, possessives, contractions, parts of a sentence, making predictions, categorizing and classifying, clusters with “r”, and verb endings –s, -ed, and -ing. Don’t forget to keep practicing your Frog Words!

Writing: We have begun our Writer’s Workshop and Words Their Way rotations and I have already seen an incredible difference in the quality of your students’ work. It is amazing to see the excitement in their faces when they write something they are proud of. I look forward to sharing their work with you soon.

Math: We have really been enjoying the new math program as we play games, read math stories, and use hands-on manipulatives as we learn our math. We have been focusing on numbers to 10, comparing numbers, adding numbers, and subtracting numbers. During November, we will focus on helpful tools to use while doing addition and subtraction, such as using a 10-frame, doubles, near doubles, and adding/subtracting with 0, 1, and 2.

Science: This month in science, the kids will be finishing up their studies of plants and begin learning about animals. The kids have been enjoying their time with Mr. Lukas and I think they’ll really enjoy the animal activities he has planned this month.
