What’s New In Room 18?

Dear Room 18 Families,
I hope all of you had a wonderful Halloween; the students all looked fantastic in their Halloween costumes. The party turned out great and I know the children all had a fantastic time. Thank you to all the parents that contributed, without you it would not have been possible!

Poem of the Month
As a reminder, students are presenting their first poem “It Couldn’t Be Done” today and tomorrow. The next poem of the month is “From a Railway Carriage.” Students will be presenting on November 30 and December 1. Attached is the poem, however I will not be announcing it to students until after everyone has presented the first poem. Same as this month, all students should be ready to present on the first day.

Breakfast Book Club
Tomorrow will be our first Breakfast Book Club meeting at 8:00 in the classroom. All students and parents who read Indian in the Cupboard are invited to come discuss the book. If possible, please bring a breakfast food to share with the group. Students should be prepared to ask the group one question to discuss. I have found that this encourages all students to participate and the conversation flows nicely. The next Breakfast Book Club Book will be Because of Winn-Dixie. Our meeting date for this book will be December 1 at 8:00. I do have a few copies to loan to the students, however if your student doesn’t receive a copy they are still encouraged to participate. Our library has all the books we read for Book Club as well as the local library.

2nd Trimester Weekly Assignment
Many of you will be relieved to find out that we only do CAL spelling the first trimester of the year. The 2nd trimester weekly assignment focuses on grammar. Each week, the students will receive a new grammar packet to complete by Thursday. Every Friday, the students will take a quiz focusing on the grammar topics and concepts covered in the packet.

PROSPECTOR (Independent Reading Program)
The last day to record all independent reading pages is this Friday, November 6. The students have been told about this several times so this should not be a surprise to them. If students are in the middle of a book, they can still count the pages that they read so far in that book for the 1st Trimester. As a reminder, the students are required to read 500 pages the 1st trimester. The 2nd Trimester pages increase to 750 pages.

Museum of the San Ramon Valley
As a reminder, our first field trip is on Friday November 13. Below is the list of parents who volunteered to chaperone the trip. Parents, please be at school at 10:15. If you can’t make it, please let me know as soon as possible so I can reorganize. Thank you so much for volunteering!

Report Cards
The last day of the 1st Trimester is Friday, November 6. Report cards will go home with the students on November 18. Please sign the envelope it comes home in and return to school so it can be reused in the next trimester.
