Dates to Remember:
Dear Green Valley Community,
It’s easy to take time and be thankful when I think about the school community I serve. Every day I come to work with a team of professionals ready and willing to serve and assist children in learning the many skills necessary for success in life. I work with dedicated parents who are willing to give generously to help ensure their children have access to the very best tools for learning, and then I get to spend every day with students who are engaged in active learning. It really is a great way to spend time!
This past month, Green Valley educators completed the last of their training with expert Kathy Glass. Over the period of three full days per grade level and one district professional development day, each grade level developed a six to eight week unit of study on one of the major shifts in English Language Arts for the Common Core. This shift was toward opinion writing. The scope of this work also included creation of student check lists, and rubrics for this unit of study. Here are a few quotes from the grade levels about the value and importance of this professional development time:
2nd grade said, “Character study lends itself to opinion reading and writing. Beginning with the end in mind helped us plan our 8 week unit. To walk away from our time and have this completed is really helpful.”
5th grade said, “Backwards planning allowed us to mirror what Common Core is asking us to do. We were reminded of the importance of focusing on essential questions, and we can help students go deeper in their thinking.”
Every grade level had positive feedback from this training, and I invite you to ask your student’s teacher about their time. I know you will hear that the days were valuable and provided intensive resources for improving the instruction we deliver to our students.
Beginning this Tuesday, the staff will begin a series of professional development meetings with two of the district TSA’s, Ngoc Nguyen and Kristina Baham. This Tuesday, Ngoc will work with the GV staff on strategies to assist with mathematics instruction. This will include learning how to incorporate the current math adoption into Common Core, as well as other tools useful for development of number sense and critical problem solving.
It is important for our parent community to know I have seen the teaching staff put in more hours than ever. These folks are here for hours and hours on the weekend, and their goal is singular. They are working to craft lessons that engage students in high level critical thinking across the curriculum. They have embraced the new learning for themselves and are dedicated to translating that into excellence in the classroom environment. Thank you GV teachers!
