Dates to Remember:
Dear Green Valley Community,
Next week we dive into parent conferences for our students. This is an important time set aside two times each year to discuss progress and areas of growth for our students. This does mean we have an amended school day and there will be early release times at all grade levels (K-5). The school day will run from 8:40 -12:25. I know the staff and I look forward to these times when we get to have one-on-one time discussing your child(ren)’s progress.
Thank you to the Green Valley Learning Fund and their auction committee! Saturday night’s extravaganza was a beautiful event with fun had by all, and most importantly, many dollars were contributed to support our students. I’d like to extend special thanks to Liz Ball, Julie Peters, and Candice Horton who worked so hard to make this important event successful and fun. Thank you also to the entire GV staff and parent community for your donations and support for our students. Our school has many important components necessary for an excellent education because of your generosity. Thank you all!
It is that busy time of year when teachers and kids are still working on this year and the teachers and I are already planning for the next year. As we move through this month we will devote more time in preparation to administer the new SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessments) practice tests. Students in grades 3-5 will test this year. Recently I sent a special email to parents about testing. As we all navigate this new testing format, it will be very important to remember this year is all about “testing the test”. To that end, we recently ran a “trial test” of our computers and had over 75 computers online and using the test window browser to see how our computers would respond. The computers did very well and the students/teachers helping us out did a great job also. The school district gathered information about this from every school site to help us make sure we are prepared to take on the testing. I am pleased to say GV came through looking very good.
I invite you as a parent to go to: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp. You can take a practice test here and gain a feel for what your 3rd-5th grade student will be tested on as well as how the test may look. As we navigate this new testing process together, this is one very important way you can educate yourself.
Lastly, it’s been some time since I touched on safety for the site. I want to thank the parents who have been showing up to assist us at lunchtime. The sign up genius is on our web homepage and the days of the week we need the most assistance are Wednesday and Friday. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Also, please make sure you are not coming through the front parking lot directly after school. We have far too many parents coming through the lot at a high rate of speed and this is the time for bus loading. I know it is not always convenient to go to the back lot, but for the safety of our students I urge you to consider following the rules of the posted signage to protect our children.
Take care and enjoy the beautiful spring like days we are having.
